Update: Democratic Alliance and Scientology March in Johannesburg

We previously reported Scientology and the Democratic Alliance (DA) joined in an anti-drug march in Johannesburg, South Africa. An article in today’s issue of Johannesburg newspaper The Citizen provides additional photographs and names of some of the participants. Although the photos show the banner for Scientology’s Foundation for a Drug Free World, the participation of Scientology in the march is not mentioned.

Above is Douglas Basil, a DA candidate for the leader of Ward 68 in Johannesburg. Below, Cape Town Mayor Ptricia de Lille (center), and John Moodley (right), a member of the Gauteng Legislature.

Seen speaking below is Mmusi Maimane, Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly of South Africa.

The leaders of the DA are calling for the re-creation of special drug units within the South African Police Service (SAPS). Scientology’s position on this issue is unknown, but entry into South African politics may be dangerous for the organization, particularly if they align against the ruling African National Congress party.

Martin Luther King, Jr. March in Queens – Foundation for a Drug Free World

We previously reported on the planned February 1st march in Jamaica, Queens sponsored by the Foundation for a Drug Free World, several youth sports teams, City Council member I. Daneek Miller, and a cupcake bakery. This photo shows a planning meeting with Meghan Fialkoff, several members of I. Daneek Miller’s staff, and several new faces we can’t identify as yet.

Update: Council-member Miller and New York City Public Advocate Letitia James will be speaking at Scientology’s march.

The Three Stooges At Big Blue

OK, everybody can open up Photoshop, because this one will require some illustration at some point. PAC Base is the “Big Blue” building at Fountain and L. Ron Hubbard Way in Los Angeles. Before Scientology bought it, the building was the Cedars of Lebanon Hospital, and we’ve also seen it referred to in “The Jewish Hospital,” with all the sensitivity to minorities the Great Depression can offer. In 1934 a group of filmmakers used it as the set of their short film “Men in Black.” They were Moe Howard, Larry Fine, and Curly Howard, better known as The Three Stooges.

From Wikipedia:

The stooges are three doctors who graduated medical school by being in it for too many years. They come across such problems as an overly chirpy nurse, a mental patient, and a combination to a safe swallowed by the hospital superintendent in the course of their attempt to get through the day.

The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Short Subject – Comedy. We’re off to watch this episode now, if anything looks familiar about the sets, let us know.
